Tech Inspection and Weigh-in

WHEN : Thursday, January 24, 2007 6:30pm - 8:00pm

WHERE : Webster Presbyterian Church basement. Take stairs near the kitchen.

WHO : All Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts, and Webelo Scouts of Pack 262.

HOW :

•  Bring your completed Pinewood derby car for inspection and official weigh-in.

•  Pack your car carefully in a shoebox or other suitable container with your name and Den # clearly labeled on the outside of the box before you come in.

•  Minor adjustments to weight can be made at the Tech inspection.

•  A permanent marker will be used to number each car on its underside to identify it for the race.

•  Once your car has passed inspection and completed the weigh-in, it will be stored in your box and secured overnight at the Church.

•  We cannot emphasize enough that this is a parent/son event and we encourage all parents and family members to attend the race and support their sons as they compete.

•  Please allow your son to perform as much of the work on his car as he possibly can. It will give him a better sense of accomplishment to have actively worked on it with you, not simply watched .

•  To ensure fairness, all rules will be strictly enforced. Please read the rules carefully before starting to build your car. The decision of the Pinewood Committee will be final. Please don't make their job difficult by "stretching" the rules. They do not want to disqualify any boy's car, but it is a possibility if the rules are not adhered to .

•  Most importantly, subscribe to the Cub Scout Motto - "Do Your Best " (remember, that's the Cub Scout Motto, not the Cub Parent Motto)

T he rules of Pack 262 are generally the same as they have been in past years.

Only the provided Official Boy Scouts of America wood block, axles, and wheels are to be used in the creation of the Pinewood Car. Permitted modifications are outlined below. PLEASE use this checklist to ensure your car will be ready for inspection.

Car dimensions : The overall width of the car may not exceed 2 ¾ inches and the overall length may not exceed 7 inches. It is also recommended you try to keep the overall height of the car to less than 4 inches due to the design of our track finish line. Nothing should extend below the bottom of the car in order to avoid interference with the track. Additional components, which may be added to the car, must be within the maximum width, length, and height requirements and must be securely attached to the car. A check fixture simulating the track will be at the Tech. inspection.

Car Weight : Cars must weigh no more than 5.00 oz. (141.75 grams) on the Official scale used at the Tech inspection. We will have some materials on-hand at the Tech inspection for increasing (or decreasing) the weight of your car. All weight must be secured; shifting (moving) weight is not permitted.

Hint: Make sure you take full advantage of the 5.00 oz. qualifying weight. Do not place weight on the underside of the car unless it is recessed to be flush or below flush of the car body. If the weight extends lower than the body, it will rub on the track guide rail.

Lubricant : No lubricant other than powdered graphite or the Official Cub Scout white lubricant sold at the scout store can be used. If there is any sign of Teflon spray or other compounds, the car will be disqualified. There will be no graphite added to any car, by any person, once the car officially passes inspection. This includes the day of the race.

Hint: Spend time working powdered graphite into the wheels and axles prior to the Tech inspection.

Wheels and Axles : No wafering (thinning of wheels) is permitted. Only the wheels and axles (4 individual nail axles) as supplied in the original kit will be accepted. As described in the kit rules, wheels can be sanded smooth to remove the parting line or flash. No tapering or rounding of the outside profile of the wheels is permitted. Check your wheels carefully for cracks and other defects. Extra wheels and axles are available for purchase at the scout store. You must use the wheel slots provided in block of wood for mounting of the axels .

Hint: File off burrs and parting lines that remain on the axles where the head meets the stem of the nail. Smoothing and polishing these axles will greatly enhance your car's performance. Straight tracking of the car is important and can be achieved by adjusting the tilt of the nail axle in the axle slot. Check the tracking of the car by gently pushing the car on a vinyl or other hard FLAT floor surface. If it runs straight, it's OK.

HAVE FUN!!!
